A cannula is a tiny tube that doctors implant into a bodily cavity, such as a person's nose, or a vein. Doctors use them to drain fluid, deliver medicine, or supply oxygen.
Intravenous (IV) and nasal cannulas can be used in the hospital and at home.
Mainly there are two types of cannulas:
1.IV Cannulas
2.Nasal Cannulas
IV Cannulas come in various subtypes, including peripheral IV cannulas, central IV cannulas, and draining cannulas. Peripheral IV cannulas are commonly used for short-term treatments, often taped to the skin for stability.
In contrast, central IV cannulas are ideal for long-term therapies, offering quick medication and fluid delivery through veins like the jugular, femoral, or subclavian. Draining cannulas, on the other hand, are employed in procedures such as liposuction to extract fluids or introduce them into body cavities or organs.
Nasal Cannulas, in contrast, are lightweight plastic tubes inserted just inside the nostrils. Standard nasal cannulas provide a lower oxygen flow rate, typically up to 4–6 liters per minute, suitable for short or long-term use and available in sizes for adults, children, and infants.
High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) therapy systems offer significantly higher oxygen flow rates, up to 60 liters per minute, while also heating the gas to body temperature for enhanced comfort. HFNCs are preferred by some due to their lightweight and less irritating nature.
Additionally, portable nasal cannulas allow individuals to receive oxygen therapy at home, typically connecting to a portable oxygen supply and coming with usage instructions from healthcare providers.

It's normal for some patients to experience brief discomfort during IV insertion and IV removal. But other than that, having an IV shouldn't hurt.
Medical professionals typically use 20-gauge IVs for general infusions. They are also used to transfer blood when 18-gauge needles are unavailable or for treating patients with tiny veins.
Superficial thrombophlebitis is an inflammation of a vein just under the skin's surface caused by a blood clot. The condition can arise after recently utilizing an IV line or after a vein injury. Some symptoms include discomfort and soreness along the vein, as well as stiffening and a cord-like sensation.
Increase the height of the IV bag: Raising the bag increases the pressure of the fluid flowing through the IV tubing, which can accelerate the drip rate.
When exposed to light, oxygen tubing turns brown owing to a reaction between the oxygen and the plastic substance, which affects the chemical composition of the tubing.
A catheter is a vinyl tube that is placed into visceral cavities such as the urine bladder. Whereas, a cannula is a tiny tube that is placed into a vein to provide drugs, blood transfusions, or fluids.
